There is now a new oral option for GLP-1 weight loss therapy. Oral wegovy has been available as a treatment for type 2 diabetes for over 5 years. Now, at a higher dose (up to 25mg daily), it has a new licence for weight loss. This is currently the most powerful oral weight loss therapy.
Wegovy contains semaglutide, a molecule usually broken down in the stomach, but it’s encapsulated in a protective covering called “SNAC” to enhance absorption. Clinical trials published in The Lancet showed that a 50mg dose (above the 25mg now licensed in the UK) achieved an impressive 15% weight loss compared to just 2% with a placebo. This performance compares favourably with injectable Wegovy and approaches results from Mounjaro, which has shown up to a 20% weight loss in some studies.
While this new oral treatment presents an exciting avenue for weight loss, potential side effects—especially gastrointestinal—must be considered, with up to 80% of trial participants reporting them. Additionally, Oral Wegovy needs to be taken on an empty stomach, first thing in the morning, with a small amount of water, requiring a 30-minute wait before consuming anything else.
