Wegovy

Weekly weight loss treatment from consultant doctors

Wegovy (active ingredient semaglutide) is a weekly subcutaneous injection used as part of a medical weight management programme.

It is a GLP‑1 receptor agonist, designed to help control appetite and slow stomach emptying. When combined with lifestyle changes, patients may lose up to 15% of their body weight over 12–18 months.

Dosage Progression Table

Wegovy is taken once a week as a small injection in the thigh, abdomen, or upper arm, with regular follow-ups to make sure treatment is safe and effective.

Eligibility & Suitability

Wegovy may be considered suitable for patients who:

  • Have a BMI over 30.
  • Have a BMI over 27 with weight‑related medical conditions (e.g. diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidaemia).
  • Have been advised to lose weight before planned surgery.

Wegovy is not suitable for everyone. Suitability will be confirmed in consultation with one of our GMC‑registered endocrinologists.

Possible Side Effects

Side effects are usually mild and temporary, but may include:

  • Nausea or indigestion
  • Constipation or diarrhoea
  • Headache, tiredness, or dizziness

Serious side effects are rare but will be reviewed in consultation. Treatment is always supervised by a GMC‑registered specialist.

  • Will I definitely be prescribed Wegovy?

    No. Medication is only prescribed if safe and clinically appropriate after consultation.

  • Is diet and exercise still important?

    Yes. Wegovy is most effective when combined with lifestyle changes.

  • Is Wegovy available on the NHS?

    It has been approved for NHS use in some cases, but availability is limited. Our service provides private access following consultation.

  • What happens if I miss a dose?

    Follow your doctor’s advice. In most cases, you can take it within a few days, then return to your regular schedule.
